2 component adhesives (2K) are chemically based on epoxides, which are a very reactive group of organic compounds. 2K adhesives cure to a plastic in the category thermoset, which creates very strong and environmentally resistant bonds. In addition, 2K adhesives are characterized by high strength and resistance to acids, fuels and UV light.
2 components glue - That's behind it
As the name suggests, the special adhesives consist of two components. Once the binder and once the hardener. The binder is a synthetic resin and the hardener is usually an amine. The individual components react only together and not with each other. Only together do they cure to form the plastic duroplastic, thus creating an extremely strong connection. Even acids, alkalis, fuels or water can not harm the adhesive and at best soften it.

How to process 2K adhesives correctly
An immensely important factor in the processing of 2K adhesives is the so-called pot life. This refers to the time frame available to process the product. The pot life is not always the same for the different products. Therefore always pay attention to the specifications of the respective manufacturer. It should also be noted that the reaction of the two component adhesive is accelerated as the room temperature is increased. The manufacturers usually refer to a room temperature of about 20 ° C at the specified pot life. If the respective pot life has been exceeded during processing and the so-called gel point of the adhesive has been reached, you should no longer process the mixture because the adhesive can then no longer sufficiently wet a surface.
Good to know: Increase the temperature by 10 ° C, doubling the reaction speed. You can take advantage of this fact to additionally thermally crosslink the adhesive, which in turn leads to a strong increase in the strength of the bond.
